Death Eater Mask by random-soul Death Eater Mask by random-soul
Just finished this Death Eater mask for Halloween. To make it, I covered my face in plaster cloth to get the shape, then built on top of the plaster mask with paper clay. Then I sanded it, scribed in the lines, and finally painted it with silver spray paint, and weathered it with acrylics. It was tons of fun! \

Note that this is three images of one mask, just to get all the angles :)

Edit1: Not for sale, as this was a one-off type project. If you're interested in other things in my gallery that are for sale, check out my web page (listed on my Devious Info).

Edit2: Holy wow, a DD! My first! Many thanks to all of you!

How did you tackle the different depth around the eyes? Is that the underlying plaster lifecast and the thicker area is where the additional paper clay starts, or is it all paperclay but just thinner around the eyes?

Wow, this is really nice work! If you ever consider making a "step-by-step" guide I think it would be awesome to follow.

Any tips on working with "paper clay" as I've never used it before. (i.e. I was thinking of using clay but had concerns about it cracking/not being robust enough to wear). Is yours wearable, or is it only strong enough for display purposes?

Stunning work - love it!

I actually didn't paint them on; they're etched into the surface of the mask.  First I very carefully sketched the lines with a pencil, using photos for reference, until I got the design perfect.  Then I took a small carving tool used for printmaking, and scribed over my pencil design.  You can get these tools fairly inexpensively at an art supply shop like Dick Blick. After that I weathered the whole mask with some black paint, making sure to get paint into all the lines I carved, and rubbing the rest away with a paper towel.  Hope this helps you :)

This is Great random-soul! I was looking for a Death Eater mask pattern that I can run through my Graphtec Vinyl cutter straight from Illustrator when I ran across your AWESOME work! I plan on using a store-bought mask for the base on THIS go-around.

Yeah, I definitely plan on making more masks in the future, but I won't be repeating this one :) I would like to make Corvo's mask from Dishonored next, but we'll just have to see what happens!

Thanks! Indeed he is. I like your gallery, btw, very cool stuff :) It's been a while since I've done any casting, since I don't have access to a kiln or centrifugal casting setup. Someday, though ;)
